Joyce L. Johnson of Sterling Heights, formerly of Manhattan, New York, died May 30, 2012, at Oakmont Assisted Living in Sterling Heights. She was 89 years old. Joyce was born September 23, 1922, in Islip, New York to Maude (nee Saunders) and Cecil Little. She graduated from Islip High School and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York before graduating from New York University with a Bachelors Degree in Education.
Joyce worked for many years as a dietitian before she was a Nutrition Instructor at the School for Practical Nursing within the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She was also a very active volunteer, serving on the Board and Executive Committee of the YWCA of New York City as well as volunteering with the New York City Power Squadron.
Joyce was an excellent seamstress and made multiple wedding dresses for various family members. She even made her own wedding dress. She was also an artist specializing in pastel chalks and pencils.
Joyce is survived by her niece, Joanne (Ernie) Taft, nephews, David (Jama) Moffett and Charles Benson, and brother-in-law, William Johnson. Joyce is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward and sisters, Dorothy Moffett and Ethel Benson.
A Funeral Service will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Road (between 14-15 Mile Rds.) Wednesday 12 noon. Friends may visit beginning at 11am. Burial to follow in Oakview Cemetery, Royal Oak.
