Born March 10, 1923 in Royal Oak, Michigan, Bob passed peacefully at home on March 2, 2010. He was 86 years old. Bob was the son of Congressman George A. Dondero and Adele (Roegner) of Royal Oak. He graduated from Royal Oak High School, attended the University of Michigan and served in the Naval ROTC, followed by active duty during World War II as an officer in the US Navy. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marion (Wilson); brother, Stanton; and wife of 56 years, Helen Gladys Dondero. He is survived by four children: George of Santa Cruz, California; Douglas of Royal Oak; Bruce of Gregory, MI; Deborah of Mears, MI; and six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and wife, Aurora (Sandoval).
Bob had a lifelong love of people, music and history. He was known for his readiness to share a good joke, a good story, or a great tune. He played the clarinet and the saxophone, and for over 50 years played in numerous big bands and smaller groups dedicated to sharing the musical traditions of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Just six days before his passing, 6 members of the Acorns, a band which Robert founded, paid him a visit to play some of his favorite big-band and swing tunes with aplomb and class.
He was an active member of the Royal Oak Historical Society. Bob often spoke publicly about his deep interest in the life of Abraham Lincoln and son, Robert Todd Lincoln, after whom Bob was named. Bob and Helen were lifelong members of the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak. He was the owner of Dondero Sash and Screen until 1973, and he later worked in sales before retiring. For many years he volunteered at the Salvation Army and William Beaumont Hospital.
