October 20, 1932 - February 24, 2010
 E. Nickolas “Nick” Bridges,
of Milford and Champion, Michigan, and a former resident of Negaunee, Michigan and Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, died on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 surrounded by his family after a long battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 77 years old.
Nick was born on October 20, 1932 in Detroit to parents Charles Fern and Caroline (nee. Kurth) Bridges. He was raised in Walled Lake and was a graduate of Walled Lake High School. In order to continue his education in college, he worked a series of full and part-time jobs at the universities and at summer resorts. After completing his undergraduate studies at Michigan State University, Nick continued at Vanderbilt Law School. He transferred to Wayne State University Law School for his final year. Though his diploma read Wayne State University, he always said he got his legal education at Vanderbilt.
Nick met Marilyn Brink, the love of his life, while at Michigan State University. The couple was married on June 16, 1956 at Marilyn's family home in Holland, Michigan. They then lived in Nashville while Nick completed his second year at Vanderbilt and Marilyn taught elementary school.
Upon completing his education, an opportunity to work as Law Clerk for Michigan Supreme Court Justice and author, John D. Voelker while studying to pass the bar exam was the impetus for a move to Ishpeming, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula in 1958. After a couple of years, the young couple moved to Negaunee where Nick formed his first law firm, DeFant & Bridges with Michael DeFant. The practice later became Bridges & Collins, and is today Bridges & Bridges where his daughter Caroline practices law. He served as the Negaunee City Attorney for nearly 30 years and was a long-standing member of the State Bar of Michigan. Despite his blindness, and later developing Parkinson’s Disease, Nick was a successful and celebrated trial lawyer.
In 1978 Nick was appointed by the Governor as a charter member of the Michigan Commission for the Blind and served two terms helping to supervise all services to blind residents of the state.
He founded the first automated radio station in the Upper Peninsula, WUUN Stereo 100 of Marquette. Other interests included developing real estate including apartments, homes and commercial property and was instrumental in bringing a senior housing complex to Negaunee. Nick was also a long-term member of the Fraternal Order of Elks.
Nick was a devoted husband and a dedicated father known for his interesting family projects. From basic home repairs to raising chickens, he found many opportunities to provide “real life” experiences for his children. He always stressed the merits of hard work and a good education, commonly reinforced with the phrase, “Jobs that don’t get started don’t get finished.” He was known for his generosity helping members of the family, friends and acquaintances as well as Lutheran churches in Negaunee and Champion.
He is survived by Marilyn, his beloved wife of fifty-four years; daughters, Marilyn (Jeff) Keating of Austin, Texas and Caroline Bridges of Negaunee; sons, Nickolas E. (Sara) Bridges of Milford Twp. and Lloyd Bridges of Negaunee; and grandchildren, Matthew, Melanie, and Heather Keating. Brother of the late Charles (Violet), Richard (the late Rose), the late Lloyd (the late Barbara), Don (the late Shirley) Bridges; brother-in-law of William (the late Carol) Brink, the late Donald Robert Brink, and Sally Mellon; many nieces and nephews and dear friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 404 East Liberty Street, Milford.

Aunt Marilyn and family,
My heartfelt condolences. I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful memories of Uncle Nick, especially those two summers in Negaunee working for him. He was my mentor. I learned so much from him, not only about the practice of law, but how to run a firm, how to deal with clients, attorneys, co-workers, and most importantly, how to work hard but still enjoy yourself. Uncle Nick, I know you're up there right now, enjoying a sauna and a cold one. God bless you and thank you!
Love, Dan
Dan Bridges | Dear Marilyn and Family,
I will always have very fond memories of the fun the four of us had in our younger days. Nick made me my first old fashioned when you were living upstairs of Johnny Voelker's office. How scared Johnny was of Grundy! And I still like old fashioneds.
My heart and love are with you.
Joanie Hansen
Joan G. Hansen | My heart hurts yet I am comforted in knowing Nick no longer suffers. He was a wonderful uncle who loved me dearly, and I him. I will miss him. I agree with Dan that he's in heaven having a cold one in the sauna, but need to add that he's probably also swapping stories with dad and Lloyd. His stories will be with me forever. Love, Carolyn

Roger Zappa
Roger Zappa | I was very sorry to hear of Nick’s passing.
He hired me for my first job as a lawyer, and I couldn’t have gotten a better education in the real world of practicing law. He always went out of his way to make me feel welcome up here, as I knew no one in the Upper Peninsula before practicing with Bridges and Collins.
His ability to practice law despite being blind was a great inspiration to me, both at the time and in my own later struggles with deafness.
My best wishes to his family.
Brian Sheridan | I was saddened to hear of the loss of your loved one. I hope fond memories of happy times will ease the grief you are going through. Nick will surely be missed by all who knew him, but he will be remembered for his many accomplishments as well.

Jerry LaMere | Marilyn, Nick, Caroline, Lloyd and Marilyn- I am saddened to hear of the passing of a great man. Growing up as your neighbor across the alley, I was always amazed at what he accomplished. He loved his work but seemed to always find time for his family as well. I always enjoyed being able to come over to your house and having Lloyd as my friend. I am also thankful for having been invited out to your camp. Thanks for putting up with the night crawlers in the garage that Lloyd and I would get out at the football field. Our thoughts are with you.

Jim and Hazel Tallio | Bridges all,
I am sorry for your loss but heartened to see Nick was still sharing a beer 2 weeks ago and is now free of physical affliction. We all owe Nick so much for the example he set by overcoming whatever difficulties life might present with grace and good humor. I shall always treasure the times at Fish Lake and in the Main Street booth and sauna and the laughter and stories we shared over the years. I think of Nick often: ducking the flying parrot, chasing bats with a racquet, flying down the highway on the tractor in his snowmobile suit, negotiating Lloyd's string traps, posing for photos with Harry Ray, swapping jokes with Burt... so many good times.
Thank you for sharing such a remarkable man.
Bruce & Kathy
